Adrenalectomy

Adrenalectomy is removal of the adrenal gland performed for Adrenal Pathology (diseases of the adrenal gland). This surgery is performed by one of the surgeons at Melbourne Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery, Dr Michael Hii.

The most common reasons for adrenalectomy are for removal of glands that overproduce hormones and cause disease, or for cancer that has grown within the adrenal gland. Occasionally the adrenal gland can grow so large and so fast that a benign (non-cancerous) tumour cannot be differentiated from a cancer. This is another situation where removal of the adrenal may be advised.

This operation is almost always performed by Keyhole Surgery . Because people have two adrenal glands there is no noticeable deficit after removal of one diseased gland. In most patients there is little post-operative pain and the post-operative stay is usually only one or two nights in hospital.
